Review: Craig McLean, The Daily Telegraph Sep 2006
Whatever you do, don’t mention the Libertines. The Fratellis might echo the ramshackle pub- rock of Pete Doherty and Carl Barat, but Glasgow’s gobby trio are more than that. Their musicianship is tighter, for one, and their tunes are better; the singer and songwriter in this gang, Jon Fratelli, spins off rollicking pop songs with ease, and conjures up a menagerie of vivid characters- whether it’s the glitter – beat tale of a stripper, Chelsea Dagger (the single that’s flying up the chart this week), or Vince the Loveable Stoner, an oompah- oompah ode to their own pie-eyed drummer, Vince Fratelli. Jon can take his foot off the pedal, too: Everybody Knows You Cried Last Night is an R&B stomper in the tradition of Manfred Mann. Witty, imaginative and raucous, this is how modern urchin- punk should sound.
